With our last visit to The Scran & Scallie being well over three years ago, we felt we were long over due a return visit. To save time, anything you want to know about the establishment can be found in our previous post (here).
|Pre Lunch Drinks|
After an enjoyable Sunday walk around the charming Stockbridge district, we arrived at the Scran & Scallie full of anticipation. The bar and the dining areas were both practically full, thus creating a vibrant atmosphere for our Sunday lunch. A range of customers, including families, couples and we even had the company of 'Arnie', a cute dog at the neighbouring table.

Before our starters we sampled six beautifully served oysters. As huge oyster fans, we were highly impressed with the freshness and flavour of the shellfish.
|Chicken Liver Parfait|
Sometimes chicken liver parfait can be served in too large a portion and becomes over powering, but thankful here the portion size was spot on. The parfait was silky smooth, and was packed full of flavour. Unsure how the pickled cabbage would work with the parfait, we felt it was a good match and added a pleasant texture. This was a thoroughly enjoyable starter course.
The soup had an intense pumpkin flavour. The addition of the crispy ham was a masterstroke. This added a slight saltiness to the soup and some texture to the dish. The poached egg elevated the soup to greater heights.

Every meal for us usually has a standout course, and this course certainly stole the show. We loved the presentation, with the perfectly cooked ham being star of the show. This was easily one of the most fun, enjoyable and tasty courses we have ever eaten anywhere. This isn’t always on the menu, so make sure you order this if you get the chance, you won’t be disappointed.
The hake had a pleasant texture and had clearly been accurately cooked. The skin was beautifully crisp which we always enjoy. The curry flavour was beautifully light and didn’t overpower any of the other flavours on the plate.

|Sticky Toffee Pudding|
This much loved classic dessert was the perfect end to our meal. The sponge was light and had just the right amount of sweetness. The pudding had a generous serving of sweet toffee sauce which was absolutely delightful.

The restaurant has recently been awarded a Bib Gourmand from Michelin, an award we feel is very well deserved. We must also mention the service. After meeting the restaurant manager Robert before while he worked at 'The Kitchin', it was great to see him excelling in his new role here. He clearly has his team operating at a very high level, as this was some of the best service we have encountered in Edinburgh.
We can understand why fine dining is not enjoyed by everyone. We feel the use of top quality ingredients to create classic dishes is what makes the place so popular. There is something here to please even the fussiest of eaters. The laidback surroundings also makes the dining experience enjoyable for all.
It took us over three years to return to the Scran & Scallie. This time we think we will struggle to last three months without a return visit, it really is that enjoyable.
